Firstly, you need to rehearse. This is an obvious, but very important step. When you stand up to deliver your speech, you’re just like a good actor getting ready to deliver his lines… and so you must rehearse the way an actor would. Read it aloud in a mirror, and remember to practice any gestures you may like to include in your speech to give it more impact. Rehearse whenever you have the time. Deliver it from memory while you’re driving to work, or in the shower. Just make sure you have committed the words and the delivery to memory thoroughly. This means even if you’re a little nervous on the day, the speech will go well – just like it’s difficult to forget how to ride a bike, it will be difficult to get your speech wrong. Just a quick side note: Some people are unsure as to whether you should read your speech, or if you have to memorize it. In most cases, it’s best to memorize it, but if you don’t trust that you’ll remember it on the big day… then it might be a good idea to strike a balance between the two. Here’s how: Memorize the wedding speech as well as you can, but also prepare a few index cards with some brief notes that will jog your memory and help you deliver the wedding speech. Try not to make the notes word for word though, as it will sound too rehearsed and wooden. By striking a balance and using notes that jog your memory, your speech will have a nice improvised quality, without getting lost. |
